Patient Success Stories

Dr. James M. Nieman and Maryan Driggers
"I should have had the surgery years ago."
After a lifetime of wear, 81-year-old Maryan Driggers’ knees were worn out. Walking up and down stairs caused her such great pain she quit using the stairs.
Dr. James M. Nieman and Maryan Driggers

For Maryan Driggers, walking up and down stairs was terribly painful. In fact, she found herself positioning her body and legs at an angle to the stairs in order to help reduce some of the pain in her legs while going up and down stairs. She was also grabbing onto the stair rail so hard that she was concerned her legs would simply give out and cause her to fall.

After years of increasing pain and believing the problem might be in her legs, she finally consulted with her family doctor, who immediately referred her to Dr. James M. Nieman with the Orthopaedic Institute of Ohio (OIO). After a comprehensive assessment, Dr. Nieman told Maryan both of her knees were worn out. Dr. Nieman recommended bi-lateral total knee replacements.

Surgery and Therapy

Maryan had her first knee replacement surgery in March 2007 and the second knee surgery
Everything went so smoothly from the first surgery through the rehab time after the second surgery.
the following June. Maryan said, "Everything went so smoothly from the first surgery through the rehab time after the second surgery. The care at the hospital was wonderful. Everyone was so kind and provided me with excellent care. It was so easy for me and my family to have everything in one location. I had such supportive and caring therapists to help after discharge from the hospital to complete my rehabilitation. Dr. Nieman is a wonderful surgeon. I appreciate his talent and caring attitude. I couldn’t have asked for anything more in my care."

Enjoying Activities Again

Since completing her physical therapy at IOS, Maryan’s now enjoying many of the activities she’d given up because of knee pain such as going on shopping trips, taking a vacation and simply going on walks.

"I should have had the surgery years ago," Maryan says. "I am forever indebted to Dr. Nieman and the staff at the Institute for Orthopaedic Surgery for their fine care – my experience was wonderful. I recommend IOS and the doctors at OIO to everyone."
